Interior architect and furniture designer Yrjö Kukkapuro is one of Finland’s most internationally renowned designers. The Karuselli chair designed by Kukkapuro in 1965 is a Finnish design classic.

The name for the rotating chair was thought up by Kukkapuro’s daughter Isa. “After it was finished, our young daughter was playing in the chair, spinning around at a furious pace shouting “this is a good carousel, this is a good carousel,” and so the chair was christened,” says Kukkapuro.

In 1966, Sir Terence Conran published a picture of his favourite chair, the Karuselli, on the cover of Domus magazine.

Karuselli was named the world’s most comfortable chair by the New York Times in 1974.

The studio, situated in Kauniainen, is a combined space for living and working.

The design of the studio began with the roof. The three-point structure of the studio was designed by Doctor of Technology and concrete specialist Eero Paloheimo. Yrjö designed the combined interiors, which served as the family home and work facilities from spring 1969 onwards.
